Distinguished Awards

The NZSSS endeavours to recognise and promote excellence in New Zealand soil science through annual awards. Nominations can be made to NZSSS council officers, or in the case of students, through their supervisors. The awards are managed by the NZSSS’s awards convener.

NZSSS Fellowships

The NZSSS highest award conferred for distinction either in research, technology, teaching, extension or the advancement of science.

NZSSS Fellowship Nominations Form

The Norman Taylor Memorial Lecture

Awarded by the President in recognition of outstanding contributions to soil science in New Zealand.

M.L. Leamy Award

Awarded every second year to the author of the most meritorious contribution to soil science published in the last three years.

L.C. Blakemore Award

Awarded every second year for outstanding performance in soil science technical support.

Post-Graduate Awards

Post Graduate Award nominations will be made by student supervisors directly to the NZSSS awards convener.  Awards include:

Morice Fieldes memorial award for PhD thesis

Awarded for the PhD thesis of exceptional merit from those nominated by university departments undertaking soil science work.

Sir Theodore Rigg award for masterate thesis

Awarded for the masterate thesis of exceptional merit from those nominated by university departments undertaking soil science work.

T.W. Walker prizes

Awarded to the best student oral and paper presentations at the Society’s conferences.

Exchange  Awards

There is an opportunity for financial support for  international exchanges.  These include:

America/New Zealand Soil Science Professional Exchange Award

The America/New Zealand Soil Science Professional Exchange encourages bi-directional sabbaticals between scientists in the U.S. and New Zealand to foster enhanced cooperative soil science research.

Funds for the exchange are provided through the Agronomic Science Foundation and the selection process is administered by the Soil Science Society of America and New Zealand Soil Science Society.
